Please and Thank You – lyrics

The chorus is sung after each verse and again at the end.

Verse 1

Little Mouse is hungry, his tummy goes grumble,
He grabs Ruby's cheese and it falls with a tumble!
Ruby says, "Mouse, there's a much better way,
Two magic words that can brighten the day!"

Chorus

Say please! Say thank you! Kind words to share,
Please! And thank you! Show that you care!
Say them at home and say them at play,
Please and thank you every day!

Verse 2

Mouse tries again, nice and gentle and slow,
"Some cheese, please, Ruby?" She smiles, "Here you go!"
He nibbles a piece and he rubs his round tum,
"Thank you!" "You're welcome!" Yum, yum, yum!

Bridge

Please for a cuddle, please for a toy,
Thank you for sharing, it fills me with joy!
Please for a story, please for a song,
Thank you, thank you, all the day long!

How to use the song at home or in class

  1. Learn the chorus firstSing only the chorus for the first few days. It repeats four times, so toddlers pick it up quickly.
  2. Add two simple signsFor "please", rub a flat hand in a circle on your chest. For "thank you", touch your fingers to your chin and move your hand forward. Signing helps children who are not talking much yet.
  3. Act out verse 2Hand your child a toy or snack and wait for "please". Then prompt "thank you" and answer "you're welcome", just like Ruby and Mouse.
  4. Use it in the momentWhen your child forgets the magic words, hum the chorus instead of correcting them. It turns a reminder into a game.
  5. Praise the effortNotice it out loud when they remember on their own: "You said please – that was kind!"
